THE ATLAS OF POLISH TRADITIONAL COSTUMES

Atlas Polskich Strojów Ludowych (eng. The Atlas of Polish Traditional Costumes)

Series has been in circulation since 1949. ISSN 0076-1435

The first issue of the series was released in 1949, it has so far covered 38 costumes from the areas of Poland. The authors of each book were and are the subject experts and specialize in their field - they are employees of museums and universities, dealing with issues of transformation of folk culture, in particular that of clothing, folk costumes and ornamentation.

According to the guidelines of the series, each book is dedicated to one region (or city eg. Wilamowice), while the fixed layout of contents covers issues such as: historical overview of development of an outfit in the study area; the current state of the costume in the study area; range of occurrence of the costume (with relevant maps); description and differentiation of male attire; a detailed description of the male attire; description and diversity of the female attire; a detailed description of female attire; manufacturers and materials; textiles; outfit ornamentation: embroidery, lacing, applications, braiding; reconstructions. The main objective is to create the broadest presentation of costumes occurring within the current borders of Poland, both historically and contemporarily. The content of the magazine is intended for professionals (ethnographers, art historians, historians), and for the animators of local communities, members of folk groups and regionalists.
