The series was created in the 40s of the twentieth century as a platform for the presentation of the results of Polish research in ethnology, or, of areas beyond the Polish borders (ethnology was back then regarded as the universal ethnography). In the time of Poland being cut off from relations with the wider world the early volumes focused on the issues relating to slavic studies and source criticism (source studies), or theoretical issues. The non-European matters started to appear initially only as a reference to the old (pre-war) Polish fieldwork. Gradually (since the end of the 60s) the specificity of the series was established as presenting original research results of younger generation of Polish ethnographers in areas outside Europe.
