Postsocialist nostalgia

In 2021 Literatura Ludowa. Journal of Folklore and Popular Culture intends to publish a monographic issue devoted to the postsocialist nostalgias. We would like to discuss the specificity of Soviet and Eastern European nostalgia (Ostalgie) in art, narratives and the practices of everyday life as a “far more vibrant and exciting” phenomenon reflecting “the situation of an alternate universe in which a complete set of mass-produced industrial products, from toilet seats to windowpanes, from shower heads to automobiles, had been invented from scratch, altogether different from the actually existing Western inventory” (F. Jameson Archaeologies of the Future. The Desire Called Utopia and Other Science Fictions, Verso, London-New York 2005: 387). The aim of this issue of Journal of Folklore and Popular Culture is to shed light on the world of the artifacts of the socialist popular culture and the contemporary practices of their fans and collectors (collections of curiosities, forensic fandom, zombie media, retrofuturistic art and narratives). We also aim to consider the question of the sources and causes of the socialist nostalgia in the in various post-communist states of Central and Eastern Europe in the 21st century.

We invite you to contribute academic articles to this issue. The preferred language is English, but we also accept Polish and Russian.
